The Nursery Rhyme Program is a public art project initiative launched in 2018 by musician Xiao He, involving numerous artists across China to collect and revitalize forgotten, vanishing traditional nursery rhymes. Building upon live performances from the field, the Xiao He team has refined the recordings in the studio to release Rowing on the Wind, the project’s first physical album. In addition to the 15 musical pieces, the album includes documentary essays, sheet music, and other archival materials related to the keepers of these nursery rhymes. These are accompanied by illustrations created by artist Xiao Longhua. The title Rowing on the Wind is inspired by the Song Dynasty poem “Boat Passing Ren’an”, which depicts a vivid scene where two children enjoy trying to capture the wind with umbrellas and using it to propel their boat. Taking “wind” as a central motif, I designed a rotatable windmill on the album cover. Throughout the package, including the lyric booklet, disc label, and supplementary inserts, recurring visual elements such as wind, boat, and umbrella can be found. The overall design features bright tones and meticulous details. Every aspect of the print components, from the custom typography of the title and the layout of text and images, to material selection, has been carefully considered. The packaging incorporates as many as six different paper textures, including recycled paper made from coffee grounds, enriching tactile experience and adding layers of sensory delight to the act of reading and exploration.
